The agreement gives both companies the freedom to innovate and reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, decades-long investments in R&D and contributions to cellular standards and other technologies. - Jenni Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies
Samsung will now make royalty payments to Nokia over a multi-year period starting January 1, 2023. The specific details of the agreement are not disclosed to the public.
Nokia holds a significant number of patents, with over 20,000 patent families and 4,500 of them considered essential to 5G technology. The company has invested heavily in research and development, with over €130 billion invested since 2000.
